New York Fashion Week: Turkish Designers

The Turkish Designers Fall/ Winter 2020 Runway show was anything but predictable. It started with light floral prints, then to futuristic box patterns, to colorful shimmering suits, and ended with edgy leather black sets.

The showstopper of the entire Hakan Akkaya collection was famous rapper Dave East who walked as a model for the first time. He is usually seen in baggy clothes and playfully rapping along other famous musicians however, in this show he was seriously all business.

He clearly knew he had more clout over the other models because he caressed his beard and opened his jacket once he got to the end of the runway.

His walk was significantly slower than all the other models and he was first in line for Hakan Akkaya. His outfit was very masculine, an all-black fur coat, high black boots, a black turtleneck, and layered silver chains to complete the look.

An interesting trend in the Turkish Designer Fall/Winter 2020 collection was that each model towards the beginning of the show was wearing one huge earring. The curtain-like earring was later on transformed into a headpiece that covered the entire face of the models.

I thought it was interesting how the designer introduced the earring from the very beginning and then moved on to form it into a headpiece, then later into shoes, and finally into matching skirts.

While the tops of these looks are exquisite in detail, the stylist clearly slacked in shoe choice. The turquoise look in the second photo below would appear more put together if the model was wearing white shoes to tie together the headpiece and the belt in the outfit.

Contrary to the second, the first photo below is a complete look with flawless continuation of patterns. The beige tone is carried head to toe, the headpiece, to the top, draping down to the thighs, and subtlety finished with a buckle on the shoe.

The Turkish Designer collection was very easy to follow, each look flowed effortlessly into the next. This carefree aura was displayed not only through the clothing but also in the models. Each model had a different messy hairstyle that catered to the flowy tone of the collection.

Turkish Designers proved that everything old can be new again. Colorful and patterned suits with 1940’s inspired shoulder pads were a standout statement. The models in these professional looks were even wearing matching tall fur caps, in close resemblance to the traditional British grenadier hats

Trends in the last section of the show include lace heels and chokers. The models wore heels that covered the entirety of their foot in lace, the shoe closely resembled a sock. On top, the models wore obnoxiously huge chokers that sparkled silver. The Hakan Akkaya collection was bold from head to toe.

The Modest Modern Woman: Noon By Noor Fall 2020 NYFW

In a current society where Fashion trends typically consist of crop tops and tight bottoms, Noon by Noor stays consistent in modest feminine fashion. Noon by Noor is Bahrain based, designed by family members Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa.

50 Varick Street was the Noon by Noor Fall 2020 Runway Show. Barricades that had the BMW logos on them and intimidating bodyguards in suits blocked the entry door. Once the runway show audience was cattled into the venue (Spring Studios) we were handed a complimentary Perrier water and lead to the elevator by friendly workers in all black.

We have all heard of the term “fashionably late” but never put much thought into why we call it that. The runway show started 40 minutes behind schedule because the models kept “messing up” in rehearsal from what I had overheard one of the directors say. The wait was worth it, the Noon by Noor execution was a minimalistic’s dream from these “fashionably late” styled models.

First, the music started with impulsive electro beats, next the curtains started to fly up and the skyline of NYC was suddenly the backdrop of the show. Each model had a unique walk to the music, their hair was uniform in a sleek low bun.

The show started with a black scarf tailored drape skirt dress and was followed by the same design but in a skirt form with a white turtleneck. What stood out in this opening was the flexibility to form this look into comfort as well as professional. The bottom of the skirt and dress have frills and gray stripes on the bottom so it is minimalistic but with flare.

A big takeaway from Noon by Noor Fall 2020 is that every model was wearing shiny black ankle boots. This choice in shoes forced the audience to hyper-focus on the designs and understand the casual-ness in every look despite how fancy they appear.

Noon by Noor’s creations are anything but rigid. The black skirt pictured can be multi-seasonal if paired with a simple crop top and sneakers. The dress in the upper right can be perfect for the office or even a funeral.

Trends in Noon by Noor include the color cream represented in silk and satin, minimalism, and square necklines. This fall collection was inspired by an autumn golden hour sunset as shown through the rose, gold, yellow, brown, black, and ivory tones in the clothing.

My favorite trend in the fall collection was the combination of gray and yellow. These two are rarely seen paired up and fit together in the most intriguing way. Gray and yellow were presented in a suit, a dress, and a jumpsuit. Yellow is a bold color so the minimalistic tones of the gray humble the look down to fit perfectly in a professional setting for the working woman.

The 2020 Oscars: All about Fashion

Top Trends!

Capes and Drapes

Oscar presenter Brie Larson carried her “Captain Marvel” title from the big screen straight to the red carpet. She wore a champagne low cut dress with a shimmering cape, in close reflection to her superhero movie. While this Celine dress in its entirety stood out on the red carpet, her red Bvlgari rock ring completed the look.

Olivia Colman also sported an elegant dress with a cape. This navy and blue velvet dress by Stella McCartney was anything but minimalistic. The sides of the dresses curved to accentuate her curvy 49 year old feminine physique and her shoulders had unexpected cutouts that fell inline with her long sleeves. Similar to Larson, this star chose a bold color for jewelry. Swarovski emerald earrings and rings added spunk to the conservative look.

Expect the Unexpected

Timothée Hal Chalamet defied the masculine cliche of wearing a “boring”suit to the 92nd Oscars. His Prada navy zip up flowed effortlessly with his shiny pants and white collar. This comfortable look was typical for Chalamet considering he has worn silk, pajama-like outfits to many past outings.

More than a Memory

Spike Lee’s purple and gold suit was worn in homage to Kobe Bryant who recently passed away in a tragic helicopter accident. The suit had Bryant’s Laker number 24 on the shoulders which was supported with a gold cross chain and purple hat. This look was sentimental for Lee because he was close to Bryant and even directed a documentary on the basketball player in 2009 titled “Kobe Doin’ Work”.

Ruffles and Spunk

Top stars such as Florence Pugh, Julia Batters, and Saorise Ronan came to the 2020 Oscars dolled up in ruffles. Ruffles certainly create a playful edge to the sophisticated mystique of these women.

The breakout actress Florence Pugh was dressed in a teal Louis Vuitton dress with matching teal strap heels. This dress is definitely an eyeful to look at, according to the fashion house it took over four seamstresses to create the dress. Her tight sleek bun was the perfect hairstyle for this bright eye candy piece of an outfit. Considering Pugh is a relatively new star, her bold look may have been worn in efforts to secure her spot in the front seat of newfound fame.

Another star who was not afraid to test the colors of the rainbow was 10 year old Julia Butters. She pranced onto the red carpet in a bubblegum pink Christian Siriano gown and a matching purse which carried her dinner for the night, a turkey sandwich. Intriguingly, Butters helped custom this dress by requesting poofy sleeves and a princess-like train.

Recycled Glamour

Sustainability is not a fashion fad, it is a necessary change in one’s wardrobe to conserve the weakening planet. Elizabeth Banks proved age doesn’t mean your individual style has to conform to the conservative stereotypes of old Hollywood. She rocked the exact same red dress she wore to the Oscars after party in 2004. “It’s gorgeous and it fits … so why not wear it again?!” Banks told her instagram followers as she paired up with organizations such as the New Standard Institute that empowers brands to minimize their carbon dioxide usage.
